• Size: Australia is almost as big as the USA. Pick 2–3 regions and fly between them.
• Seasons are reversed: summer is Dec–Feb, winter Jun–Aug. The tropical north is best May–Oct.
• Visas: most visitors need an ETA or eVisitor before flying. Check the official Department of Home Affairs website.
• Sun and safety: the UV is strong, so wear sunscreen and a hat, and swim between the red and yellow flags. Emergency number: 000.
• Driving: drive on the left. Outback distances are huge, so plan fuel and rest stops (toilets on AussieLoo).
• Respect Country: many sites are sacred to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Follow the signs.
